Five Ways To Make Someone Smile During National Compliment Day
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ~ Leo Buscaglia
Today is National Compliment Day, a special day that serves as a reminder of the power of kind words. In a perfect world, we would all remember to show love and offer people compliments every day, but it isn’t, and we don’t, and so sometimes we need a little reminder to express appreciation for friends, family, coworkers, and yes, even strangers. Compliments make people feel good about themselves, create a positive connection between the two of you, and are likely to inspire the same kind of attitude from the person you complimented. You may even get a compliment back!
Your goal today is to go out and compliment someone. Anyone! Say something that will make them smile and feel good. And then, continue this practice on a daily basis and see the difference it makes in your life.
Here are 5 ways to make a difference on National Compliment Day.
- Be Sincere & Be Specific
The best kind of compliment is specific and sincere. “You look nice,” is vague and generic. Be specific! Point out an item of clothing, or make a compliment on their hair style. Even better than a compliment about their appearance would be a compliment about their actions. Compliment a colleague on their work performance, a loved one on their cooking, or your child on a good grade at school. How about the person who packed your groceries at the store? Or the quiet coworker who works in accounting? Let them know they are special.
- Be Kind to a Stranger
You don’t necessarily even have to know a person in order to pay them a compliment. Share the love with a stranger and watch how it makes them feel good and brightens up their day.
- A Small Gift
Giving a gift to someone isn’t necessary–a compliment is a gift in and of itself, after all–but a small present for that special individual, along with some kind words, could really make their day memorable. We generally favour prepaid cards, since they offer recipients the ability to treat themselves, but whatever you give, it will help them remember this day forever, not because it’s their birthday or Christmas, but because you let them know that they are awesome!
- Receive A Compliment With A Smile
It’s easy to give out compliments, but sometimes it can be hard to accept kind words graciously. People can be awkward or dismissive of getting compliments (some can be downright disagreeable), but learning to accept a compliment will not only make you feel better, it will make the other person more likely to continue to say nice words to people. Also, don’t feel the need to reciprocate with a compliment when you receive one–just accept it and be happy!
- Share Your Story
Share the story of your compliment. People are far more likely to “hop on the bandwagon” and actively give out compliments if they are aware of how happy you made someone. Making people feel good is contagious, so spread the word, and the smiles!
Help us get the bandwagon rolling! Add a story in the Comments section or via any of our social media channels — let’s spread some joy and put some smiles on people’s faces today! #complimentday
