Is Your Company Giving Back? Why Donating To Charity Leads To Happier Employees
Companies that support charities have happier and more engaged employees, according to recent studies.
71 percent of employees who work at companies that organize charitable events believe “the purpose of their organization motivates them to do their best work.” 84 percent said they “believe their organization has a clear purpose.” 57 percent say these charity events have a strongly positive effect on morale. Nearly 40 percent said these kinds of events made them feel more connected to their company culture.
Working at companies that give back to charities also make employees more likely to remain with their current company versus looking for a new job with another organization. Millennial employees would take less pay to work for socially responsible employers, and employees that have opportunities to volunteer with charities supported by their employers exhibit greater happiness in the workplace. According to a 2016 Deloitte study on volunteering, millennials were “twice as likely to rate their corporate culture as very positive” if their company participated in workplace volunteer activities.
An increase in employee morale leads to increased productivity, lower turnover rates, and fewer sick days or mental health days. In turn, this will lead to an increase in customer satisfaction. Properly engaged and motivated employees can lead to an increase in performance by as much as 44 percent. Clients who experience superior customer service are 10 to 30 percent more loyal than other customers.
Connecting with charities also helps improve your business’ presence and reputation in the community, and can provide valuable marketing and networking opportunities. However, many companies are not seizing the charitable opportunities available to them. According to Giving USA, while charitable giving by companies was up 3.5 percent in 2016 to $18.55 billion, companies only donate 5% of the nearly $400 billion Americans give to charity annually.
