DCR Strategies Hosts Book Drive For The Children’s Book Bank Charity

The Children’s Book Bank is a charitable organization whose mission is to provide free books and literacy support to children living in low-income and high-needs neighbourhoods and communities across Toronto.

The Children’s Book Bank collects gently used children’s books from families and from publishers and retailers who cannot use them. They then distribute the books through their storefront and across the city of Toronto. Since 2008, the Book Bank has operated a beautiful storefront space located in the Regent Park / St. James Town neighbourhood. The Children’s Book Bank welcomes school and camp groups as well as families and their children to listen to stories, browse their collection, and choose a favourite book to take home to keep. The Book Bank is like a wonderful children’s bookstore, except for one big difference: the books are available to the children free of charge. The Book Bank has a large inventory of books suitable for children from birth to age twelve. Families are welcome to visit as often as they wish and every child (and accompanying caregiver) can take and keep one book every day. In 2016, The Children’s Book Bank gave away 120,000 donated books.

In addition to supplying free books, The Children’s Book Bank offers informal literacy support through its various programs, including Dictionaries for Newcomers, Books Across The City, and School Trips with Story Times. The Book Bank also provides additional books and literacy materials through community centres, schools, and health clinics throughout the city.

This year, DCR Strategies is teaming up The Children’s Book Bank to host a book drive in order to help build and sustain the charity’s inventory of books. Taking place from Feb. 20 to Mar. 6, the book drive will also help raise money needed to ship these books to children with the Greater Toronto Area. As well, members of of DCR Strategies will have the opportunity to go onsite and volunteer later this year to read book to children who visit the charity.

Last holiday season, DCR Strategies worked alongside staff of Covenant House Toronto, Canada’s largest shelter for at-risk, homeless, and trafficked youth, to meet and serve lunch to youths.
